Its founder, Wang Chuanfu, once drank battery fluid to impress big-name investors, the Wall Street Journal reported. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe founder of Chinese automaker BYD, Tesla's biggest global EV rival, once drank battery fluid in front of a big-name investor to show just how serious he was about his company, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. David Sokol, a lieutenant of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, noticed BYD's momentum and visited the company in Shenzhen as early as 2008, according to the Wall Street Journal. BYD saw some hiccups as other Chinese EV makers entered the market and Tesla shored up its Chinese operations. Aside from BYD's unique business achievements, its two head executives also have a noteworthy and fascinating dynamic, the Wall Street Journal reported.

A new ProPublica report found Clarence Thomas has accepted more undisclosed gifts from billionaires. On Thursday, ProPublica released an investigation that revealed new information on the gifts billionaires have given Thomas over the years. Months later, the Supreme Court in June indeed struck down the student-debt relief, with Thomas voting in the majority. Last month, Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee passed a bill that would create a code of ethics for Supreme Court justices, but it's unlikely the bill will pass under a Republican-controlled House. Can Congress do various things to regulate the Supreme Court?

These costly trips and travel perks often went unreported on the justice’s financial disclosure forms, ProPublica said in its investigation. Lynne Sladky/APProPublica interviewed more than 100 people, including staff that would have worked some of the trips that Thomas took. Thomas did not respond to ProPublica’s detailed list of questions for its report, nor did Novelly. None of the Thomas benefactors highlighted in the new report appear to have had direct business in front of the Supreme Court, ProPublica said. Thomas intends to amend his financial disclosure forms, a source close to the justice previously told CNN, to at least reflect Crow’s 2014 purchase of Thomas’ mother’s home.

Several friends of Clarence Thomas helped finance a documentary on the justice. Thomas vehemently denied the allegations and was confirmed to the Supreme Court in a close 52-48 vote. The actor Wendell Pierce, best known for his role as Detective William "Bunk" Moreland on HBO's "The Wire," played Thomas. That film, "Created Equal: Clarence Thomas In His Own Words," was released in 2020. While speaking during an appearance at a Connecticut library, he once remarked that Thomas had dealt with "lies, innuendo, distortions, and outright personal attacks" throughout the Supreme Court confirmation process.

One letter came from David Sokol, the former Berkshire Hathaway executive who stepped down amid allegations of insider trading. In his letter, Sokol says Holmes' jury may have lacked the business knowledge he believes is necessary to reach an appropriate verdict in this case. The SEC investigated but ultimately decided not to file insider trading charges against Sokol, though Berkshire said he violated the company's insider trading policy. As a knowledgeable investor, I can say with certainty that I would not have found Ms. Holmes guilty on any of the wire fraud charges." Later in his letter, Sokol even invoked Thomas Edison's name to make his case for leniency.
"This process is a string of unlikely events that lawyers, advisors and board members all told her would never come to be." He wrote: "Liz has been called an incredible salesperson, that she wooed investors, partners, and employees with a sales pitch so compelling that they couldn't help but to be involved. Evans also shed some light on goings-on in Holmes' life during the trial. He says Holmes is, in fact, pregnant, as one witness hinted at in a recent evidentiary hearing. "The price Liz and our family pays for this process is not just the potential incarceration that you will decide.
Why We’re Bullish on Energy Stocks

U.S. energy stocks may be a rare fit for both. Energy stocks should continue to outperform as capital rotates from technology to energy. Record low interest rates from 2009 through 2021 led investors to embrace risk by valuing uncertain cash flows in the distant future relative to low-yielding cash in the bank. That fueled a 12-fold appreciation in U.S. technology stocks, as the sector’s average price-earnings ratio rose to 34 from 13. Unprecedented fiscal stimulus left consumers and states flush with cash that fueled even greater risk-taking, while lockdowns and remote work favored tech.
